'. . . guitar hurts my hand when I play'

This is a common problem experienced by all guitar players at sometime or other. The cause is almost always a badly set-up guitar - more specifically a guitar with high string-action (the distance from the strings to the frets) and an incorrectly slotted string nut. When the nut slots are not correctly slotted the strings will sit high above the fret board. This will also cause a ton of tuning problems caused by the excessive friction in the nut slots.
